Ever crave that delicious Gyro sandwich that turns and turns slowly in those beautiful spits basting in their own juices? I love Gyro sandwiches and wanted to come up with an easy at home method. This creation of mine did not disappoint me and I think you will love it too!
I love Greek food!!! It is an amazing cuisine with massive depth of flavor to their national dishes. I really love Gyros, which is a chunky or ground meat mixture combined with herbs and spices that just take you to the next level in foodie heaven. The traditional way of cooking it is on a spit or a rotisserie. What I wanted to do was come up with an easier method but still equally delicious. Well let's just say my family keeps on asking for this recipe over and over again and in case your not familiar with my family yet, they are in the foodie sense VERY spoiled and picky.
Gyro or Greek Meat Ingredients:
2 1/2 lb. Ground Beef
2 Tbsp. white onion, minced
2 Tbsp. red onion, minced
2 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced
2 Tbsp. fresh mint, minced
2 Tbsp. fresh oregano, minced
1 Tbsp. garlic, chopped
fresh ground black pepper
1 cup feta cheese, crumbled
1-2 pinches of fresh ground nutmeg
1 heaping tsp. ground allspice
1 heaping tsp. ground cumin
1 heaping tsp. ground coriander
1 Tbsp. salt
Combine all these ingredients well, making sure everything is evenly incorporated. You can make this the day before and allow all the spices to infiltrate and infuse the meat. When ready form into patties and pan fry or grill just like you would hamburgers. I do recommend you make them smaller than a typical hamburger patty.
Yogurt & Herb Sauce ( Tzatziki Sauce ):
2 cups plain yoghurt ( I like full fat )
1/2 cup sour cream
2 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice
1 cup cucumber, chopped fine
1 Tbsp. garlic, minced
2 tsp. good olive oil
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. ground coriander
1 Tbsp. fresh mint, minced
1 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced
1/2 Tbsp. fresh oregano, minced
Hint: if you want your sauce to be thicker or creamier you can salt your cucumbers after you have chopped them up and place them in a colander on top of a bowl to drain. This will draw out the liquid. You can skip this step but your yogurt sauce will be thinner because the liquid inside the cucumber will leach out over time and thin out your sauce.
Additional Ingredients needed:
Pita bread - if your low carb serve the patties and veggies with the sauce on top and no bread
tomatoes, sliced
red onion, sliced
lettuce
I like to serve these with a side of kalamata olives ( or any olive you like ) and a slice of feta cheese.
